Physicist Develops Drip-Free Wine Bottle

No matter how much of a wine aficionado you are, you can’t escape the pesky wine drip on your own. Wine bottle drips are like a barrier for wine lover’s existence. Sommeliers are aware of this issue and wrap a napkin around the neck. There are ways to prevent spillage with nifty devices inserted into the bottle neck. Similarly, a biophysicist, Daniel Perlman have developed a new way i.e., a drip-free wine bottle.

Over the course of three years, he has been studying the flow of liquid across the wine bottle’s lip. To create this drip-free wine bottle, he just cut down the groove below the lip.

There are the products available in the market to prevent wine spillage. But they require inserting a device into the bottle neck in addition.

Perlman said, “I wanted to change the wine bottle itself. I didn’t want there to be the additional cost or inconvenience of buying an accessory. Figure out the physics, he thought, and you might be able to build a drip-free wine bottle.”

Perlman started analyzing slow-motion videos of wine being poured in his three years study. He primarily observed the extreme drippage, when the bottle was full or close to it. He also observed a stream of wine tends to curl backward over the lip and run down the side of the glass bottle. This happens because of hydrophilic bottle glass. That means, it attracts water more.

Perlman realized that creating a groove around the neck of the bottle below its lip could stop the last dribbles of wine from escaping. Using a diamond-studded tool, he found the perfect width of the indentation to be roughly two millimeters in width and a millimeter in depth.

Through this, a wine droplet got a difficult task about fighting the effects of gravity to make it past the groove.

According to Perlman, “This drip-free wine bottle could become an active part of the physics.”
