Method to Make Smart-Watches Easy to Use

Scientists have devised a novel method to make smart-watches and fitness tracker easier to use. This novel research is done by Computer scientists from the University of St Andrews. Through this method, scientists are able to convert the technology without buying new hardware.

Currently, users are facing the problem of smart-watches because of their small touch input interface. Although, scientists have created a new interface with the help of inbuilt sensors. They use same inbuilt sensors that used in most smart-watches. This is for the first time, such technology easily integrated into existing watches.

The novel method makes it faster and easier to execute a variety of functions. For example, to turn up the volume by twisting the watch face; scroll between menus by panning left or right, or even play games by twisting the face to move a character and tapping with another finger to fire a weapon.

Texting also made easier for smart-watch users by using pressure to select characters instead multiple taps.

Professor Aaron Quigley said, “Direct input with our smartphones or smart-watches allows many forms of interaction, however with small diminutive devices our fingers and hands get in the way, blocking our view of what is happening. WatchMI overcomes this problem and allows us to wear and interact with all the pixels on our body-worn devices, not just the ones our fingers aren’t blocking.” (Aaron Quigley Chair of Human Computer Interaction at the School of Computer Science at the University.)

Other examples of the new interface include being able to twist the watch face to change the time on the alarm clock. Using pan and twist to scroll across maps and to zoom in.
