Bakey’s company from Telangana, Hyderabad, India came with their new inventions. The company makes edible cutlery i.e. edible spoons, forks, and chopsticks that we can eat.

According to the United Nations Environmental Program, the whole world uses 110 million tons of plastic per year. Most of them end up in a disposal area. Generally, most plastic utensils are neither recyclable nor biodegradable. As per this calculation, if you use a plastic utensil for 10 minutes, it finally travels to a disposal area where it stays for more than 1,000 years. If it doesn’t end up in there, then it will end up in an ocean.

Narayana Pessapaty, the founder of the company, said, “I was fed up due to some 15,000 tons of plastic waste that enter India’s disposal area every day. So, I decided to do something about it.”

These edible spoons come in various flavors like sugar, ginger- cinnamon, cumin, mint- ginger and carrot- beetroot. It is actually made from rice, wheat, ajwain, jowar flour, black pepper. This edible spoon has a mean life of two to three years.

Pessapaty hopes that this edible cutlery will dispatch on waste.

Pessapaty said, “Tons and tons of rice rot every year in India. I had to do something. We first began by making chopsticks with rice and Jowar and later produced spoons and forks.”

“I realized my main competition was with plastic spoons because they are cheap. My spoons are Rs 2 each. However, I am working to bring the cost downs to Rs 1.5 or Rs 1. If demand increases, prices will come down further. I am looking forward to replacing plastic cutlery used in small restaurants and railways with these edible ones”, he continued.

This cutlery is also perfect for teething babies. It can be used for eating anything and last until the end of your food. The amazing thing is, this cutlery doesn’t get soggy in hot food and water too. You can eat it after your meal. It comes in different sizes. If you use and didn’t eat, it will automatically decompose itself within 5- 6 days.
